Popular names - Quebec

MONTREAL – Léa and William were the most popular names given to babies in Quebec in 2009, according to the Régie des rentes du Quebec, a provincial government agency that administer a support program for families with children.
Among boys, 1,074 were named William in 2009 and 442 girls were named Léa.
William is returning to the top spot after reigning supreme in 2006 and 2007 and after losing top billing to Thomas in 2008.
Léa has been in top spot on the girls’ names list for six years. Meanwhile, a statement from the Régie noted that the girl’s name Laurence has slipped from fourth place in 2008 to 17th place last year.
In 2009, 9,170 female surnames were registered and 7,818 male surnames were registered with the Régie. Those numbers include distinct rankings for differently spelled variants of the same name, like Megan and Mégane.
The Régie’s website, www.rrq.gouv.qc.ca/prenoms, includes a list of the most popular names and a search function to consult the list. In 2009, the Régie’s list was consulted 407,500 times.
